Prayers From the Heart

Once a group of disciples were walking with the Ba’al Shem Tov [the Jewish mystic and rabbi regarded as the founder of Hasidic Judaism] when they overheard an uneducated villager badly mispronounce the Hebrew words of a prayer he was reciting to himself. They all laughed at how he mangled the words of the prayer.

Later, the Ba’al Shem said to them, “Prayer must come from the heart. That is why the prayers of simple people are often said with great devotion – because they are spoken from their heart. God highly values such prayers. Uneducated people may badly mispronounce the words, but God judges all prayers only according to the faith with which they are offered.”

When a small child who cannot properly speak babbles something to his father, the father is touched and gets pleasure from the child’s unintelligible babbling. He feels joy in giving the child whatever he wants. In the same way, when a simple person prays with a sincere heart, though mispronouncing a prayer’s words, the Heavenly Father will not care if the words are mispronounced. He is listening only to the emanations of love coming from the person’s heart.

एक बार शिष्यों की एक टोली बाल शेम टोव (यहूदी महात्मा और रब्बी जिन्हें हसीदी यहूदी धर्म के संस्थापक माना जाता है) के साथ जा रही थी, उन्होंने एक अनपढ़ ग्रामीण को अकेले में यहूदी प्रार्थना करते हुए सुना। वह प्रार्थना के शब्दों का उच्चारण गलत ढंग से कर रहा था। वह जिस तरह प्रार्थना के शब्दों को बिगाड़ कर बोल रहा था उसे सुनकर सभी हँसने लगे।

बाद में बाल शेम टोव ने उनसे कहा, “प्रार्थना दिल से की जानी चाहिए। इसलिए साधारण लोगों की प्रार्थनाएँ अकसर भक्ति-भाव से परिपूर्ण होती हैं क्योंकि वे उनके दिल से निकलती हैं। परमात्मा के लिए ऐसी प्रार्थनाओं की बहुत अहमियत होती है। अनपढ़ लोग भले ही शब्दों का गलत उच्चारण करते हों, लेकिन परमात्मा उन सभी प्रार्थनाएँ को उसी भाव से स्वीकार करता है, जिस श्रद्धा भावना से वे की जाती हैं।”

एक छोटा-सा बच्चा, जो ठीक से बोल नहीं पाता, जब तोतली आवाज़ में अपने पिता से कुछ कहता है, तब उसकी बातें पिता के हृदय को छू लेती है और बच्चे की नादानी-भरी तोतली आवाज़ से पिता को ख़ुशी मिलती है। बच्चा जो चाहता है, उसे वह देने में पिता को ख़ुशी महसूस होती है। उसी तरह, जब कोई सीधा-सादा व्यक्ति सच्चे दिल से प्रार्थना करता है, भले ही उसने प्रार्थना के शब्दों का उच्चारण ग़लत किया हो, परमपिता परमात्मा को इससे कोई फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ता। वह केवल उस व्यक्ति के दिल से निकलने वाले प्रेम के भावों को सुनता है।
